Facility 21
The building had no windows and too many drains. Down in the sublevel, the vats hummed like they were thinking. Scientists wrote equations they didn’t understand on a chalkboard that never got cleaned. The rats understood them first.
One wore a lime hoodie and cracked glasses. He watched the green climb the glass, tapped the tank twice, and named the batch LABRATS like it was already a crew. Then he chewed the lock until the metal tasted like freedom.
They left in a line. The leopard with the blindfold carried the tongs. The crier still had the pipe. Jersey 21 saw everything in two colors. The pink one smoked like the hallway owed him money. Behind them came the rest — lasers, party hats, crystals, wings, a bird that refused to leave the nest.
Nobody filed a report that made sense. The cameras caught steam, sparks, and fifteen silhouettes walking out like they had somewhere better to be. If you smell ozone and cheap cologne, you’re standing where they stood.
